Turmeric is a root in the Zingiberaceae family and is also known as the "saffron of the Indies." Once the root is dried in the sun, it is reduced to a bright yellow powder.

The aroma is vaguely reminiscent of saffron, with more bitter and acidic-but never unpleasant-notes that emphasize the slightly musky, bitter, warm, full-bodied palate.

Chef's Advice

Turmeric is considered a super food because it is rich in the highly beneficial curcumin, starch, potassium and vitamin C. Ideal in white meat dishes, creamy risottos and soups, and with fish and cheese spreads. An excellent addition to potatoes, cooked fruits, yogurt and sauces, it also works as a salad dressing. It is best expressed when used cold, at the end of the cooking process, in order to preserve its properties.
